Learn to Sew for Beginners - Pillow Cushion Sewing Workshop
Made By Me Workshop
Start Your Sewing Journey – Make Your First Cushion Cover.
Always wanted to learn how to sew but not sure where to start? This relaxed, beginner-friendly workshop is the perfect introduction. In just 3 hours, you’ll learn how to set up and use a sewing machine, practice essential stitches, and complete your first project: a simple yet stylish envelope cushion cover in your choice of fabric.
This class is all about building confidence — you’ll leave not just with a handmade cushion you’ll love to use at home, but with the skills to make many more on your own.
Skill Level:
Absolute beginners or anyone wanting a gentle refresher before diving into a more advanced class. No prior sewing experience required.
What You’ll Learn:
- How to wind a bobbin and thread a machine
- Basic stitches: straight stitch, backstitch, and zig zag
- Understanding tension and settings
- Sewing clean seams, corners, and seam allowances
- How to measure a cushion insert and cut fabric to fit
- Troubleshooting common beginner mistakes
- Finishing techniques for a polished, professional look
What's You Will Make:
A finished envelope cushion cover (standard 45 × 45 cm insert), sewn by you. Once you know the method, you’ll be able to adapt it to any cushion size at home.
What's Included:
- Use of our sewing machines and tools
- Expert step-by-step guidance in a supportive, friendly space
- Tea, coffee, morning tea treats, and lots of encouragement!
What to Bring
- Fabric (we’ll send you a guide with recommended fabrics and quantities)
- Matching all-purpose sewing thread
-
Essential sewing tools, including:
- Fabric scissors (or sharp scissors suitable for cutting fabric)
- Thread snips
- Seam ripper (also known as a quick-un-pick)
- Pins or sewing clips (highly recommend clips when sewing pleats)
We do have scissors and basic tools available to use in class, but if you’re planning to keep sewing at home, we recommend bringing your own — especially fabric scissors and thread snips, which are well worth having in your kit.
Don’t have everything yet? We’ll have a Sewing Starter Kit available to purchase on the day, which includes all the essentials you need.
Fabric Suggestions:
Choose a fabric that suits your style and your home. Light- to medium-weight woven fabrics work best:
- Cotton or cotton-linen blends
- Upholstery-weight cottons
- Linen (plain or printed)
- Chambray or denim (softer weights)
Avoid: Fabrics that are stretchy, slippery (like satin or rayon), or very bulky.

Why Join Our Sewing Workshops?
This class is more than just learning to sew a cushion — it’s the first step on a creative journey. At Made By Me Workshop, we’re building a community of sewists who come together to learn, share, and create in a supportive, inspiring space.
By starting here, you’ll gain the confidence and foundational skills to take on bigger projects like our wrap skirt or wrap dress workshops. Over time, you’ll discover how rewarding it is to build your own capsule wardrobe, make sustainable fashion choices, and enjoy the company of like-minded makers along the way.
It’s not just about the cushion you’ll take home — it’s about carving out time for yourself, building confidence stitch by stitch, and finding your place in a creative community.
