Discover the beauty of indigo and hand-paint your own set of linen napkins in this joyful festive workshop led by Cath Derksema from The Happenstore.

Join the always-inspiring Cath Derksema from The Happenstore for a hands-on morning of creativity, colour and discovery as you explore the magic of indigo dye and learn how to create your own original hand-painted linen napkins.

You’ll make a beautiful set of four linen napkins (50 × 50 cm) — perfect as handmade gifts (although you may just want to keep them for yourself!). Using brush-painting techniques, Cath will guide you through ways to create patterns, marks and tones that capture the beauty and spontaneity of indigo dyeing.

You’ll also receive 1 litre of indigo dye to work with during the session, along with all tools and materials provided. Expect to experiment freely, play with pattern and form, and be amazed at the scope of what you can achieve — even simple dots and brushstrokes look fabulous!

Cath will have extra napkins and tea towels available for purchase on the day if you’d like to keep creating.

Don’t wear your best clothes — indigo has a way of finding itself on fabric! We’ll have plenty of aprons available, but it’s best to wear an old shirt as well, just in case.

What You’ll Learn:

  • How to hand-paint fabric using indigo dye and simple mark-making techniques
  • Tips for working with indigo safely and confidently
  • Ways to experiment with pattern, texture and tonal variation
  • How to create a cohesive set of hand-painted napkins for display or gifting

What you need to bring with you:

Why You’ll Love It:

This workshop is all about creativity, play and discovery — a joyful opportunity to slow down, experiment and make something truly special by hand. Whether you come with ideas in mind or prefer to let the dye lead the way, you’ll leave with a set of beautiful, original linens and plenty of inspiration to keep going.

Cath’s workshops are always warm, colourful and full of laughter. You’ll leave feeling uplifted, with blue-stained fingers and a big smile!

Cancellation Policy: Due to the limited number of spaces for workshops, all bookings are final and strictly non refundable. We do not refund classes but you are welcome to send someone else in your place if you can't make it on the day. Since Cath is a special guest teacher it is not possible to reschedule the workshop to another day. In most of our workshops we require a minimum number of people to run the workshop and will do our absolute best to run every workshop we list but occasionally it is not commercially feasible to do so. In the unlikely event that we don't reach this number, we may cancel the class; in this case, we'll inform you and allow you to get a full refund or reschedule.
